The Sweet Lesson of Slowing Down: Banana-Nut Bread and a Healed Home

Writer's picture: Alexis WilsonAlexis Wilson

Life moves so fast, doesn’t it?

Between work, kids, and everything else pulling at me, it’s easy to overlook the beauty of the small, simple things, like slowing down to bake something sweet for my family.

Honestly, this wasn’t something I grew up seeing or experiencing. Sitting down together, sharing a meal, or baking just for the joy of it wasn’t the norm.

But here’s the beautiful part: healing starts with us!

I’ll admit, I’m not perfect at this. There are days when I let the busyness win. But I’ve learned it’s not about doing it all perfectly, it’s about showing up and trying. It’s about pausing long enough to humble myself and serve my family, even when it’s hard. And let me tell you, I can’t do that alone. I need the help of the Holy Spirit to remind me what really matters and to give me the strength to keep going.

One of the ways I’ve found joy in this is through baking. There’s something about the smell of banana-nut bread filling the house that feels like love wrapped in warmth.

My family doesn’t just love the bread, they love that I slowed down and took the time to make it. It’s in these small, intentional acts that I see what a healed home looks like.

Life’s sweetest moments often come from the simplest things, like the smell of something warm baking in the oven or the joy on your family’s faces when they taste what you’ve made just for them.

That’s why I want to share one of my favorite ways to slow down and bring a little love into my home: this banana-nut bread recipe.

It’s not just about the bread, it’s about the time spent making it, the memories created, and the reminder that even the smallest acts of love can make a big difference.

So, let’s step into the kitchen together and bake something that’s not only delicious but also full of intention and heart.

Here’s how to make it:

Banana-Nut Bread Recipe 🍌 🍞

Ingredients:

  • Nonstick cooking spray, for greasing

  • 1 stick unsalted butter or lactose-free butter

  • 3 large ripe bananas, mashed, plus 1 halved lengthwise for decoration

  • 3 large eggs

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup dark brown sugar, plus more for sprinkling

  • 2 teaspoons baking powder

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt

  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350˚F. Grease an 8.5-by-4.5-inch loaf pan with nonstick cooking spray.

  2. In a light-colored sauté pan, brown the butter over medium heat. Once it’s fragrant and golden, remove from heat and let it cool slightly.

  3. In a medium bowl, mix the mashed bananas and eggs until fully incorporated.

  4. In another bowl, whisk together the flour, brown sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, salt, and nutmeg. Use your hands to break up any large clumps of brown sugar.

  5. Combine the banana mixture with the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Pour in the browned butter and stir until fully incorporated.

  6. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan. Place the halved bananas on top, cut-sides up, and sprinkle with a little brown sugar.

  7. Bake for 70–80 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean.

Pro Tip: If using a larger loaf pan (9-by-5-inch), reduce the baking time to 55–60 minutes.

A Reflection on Baking and Building Connection

As you enjoy the fruits of your labor, take a moment to reflect on the love and care poured into even the smallest of actions. Whether it’s baking bread, sitting down for a family meal, or simply showing up for your loved ones, these moments reflect God’s heart for us. His unfailing, intentional love.

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” – Colossians 3:23

May this recipe be a reminder that even in the little things, we can glorify God and serve our families with love. Let’s keep pursuing what matters, one small act of kindness at a time.

With love and grace,

Alexis Nickelle Co.
